As we can see in Genesis 3:1 it is written that serpent was the craftiest of all the creatures the Lord God had made. So who is this serpent ? From Revelation 12:9 we can say that the word 'serpent' is used to describe satan. His name was Lucifer. His name bears the meaning light-bearer in Hebrew. As you can see his name reveals his character he used to have. Light stands for truth of knowledge of God. He used to be the most glorious angel of all. He was a Cherub(Guardian angel). Cherubs have authority whereas angles have command.

So the serpent came to the woman and said "Did God really say that you must not eat any fruit from the Garden". Here we can see that satan is trying to make her doubt what God had said. She said "We may eat any fruit from the trees in the Garden except from the tree at the center of the garden and we may not even touch it or we may die". He replied "You may surely not die" the serpent said to the woman "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil". Here we can see that satan is trying to persuade her with the same thing, due to which he had been fallen from the glory of God. Which was to become like God. He is a destroyer. In the animal kingdom we can see that snakes have the tendency to wait for their preys for hours and hours. They never let their venom go in vain. In the same way satan waits for his prey.
After been convinced by satan she saw that the fruit of the tree was good and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and ate it.
As soon as they ate the fruit their eyes were opened and they realized that they were naked. So they sew the fig leaves in order to make covering for themselves. As the evening came they heard the Lord God walking through the Garden, they hid themselves among the trees. So God called Adam," Where are you?". He answered "I heard you coming. I didn't want you to see me naked. So I hid. "So the Lord God asked him " who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree I had commanded you not to eat from?"
He said yes but the woman you put here with me gave me the fruit and I ate it. Then the God said to the woman " what is this you have done?". She said " The serpent tricked me, and I ate". So the Lord God cursed the serpent that he would crawl on his belly and he would eat dust. He said that he would put enmity (a feeling of hatred towards an enemy ) between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers. He would crush his head while he would strike his heel. As we know offspring of the woman is been used for Christ because Jesus was born by Holy Spirit and from the virgin Mary. So He said to the woman that He will Greatly increase her pain in childbearing. Your desire would be for her husband, and he would rule over her. To Adam he said because he listened to his wife and ate from the tree he has placed curse upon the soil. All his life he would have to work hard to extract a living from it. Then he would return to the ground from which he came and the man named his wife Eve(means life giving one). For she would become the mother of all mankind. And the Lord God gave them garments made out of skin animals. And He said "The man has become like one of us knowing Good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever. So the Lord God banished them from the garden of Eden. After He drove man out of Eden He placed a cherubim with a flaming sword on the east side of Garden of Eden to guard the tree of life.
Application
- The question always arises to the people that if God is Omnipresent then why didn't He stop Adam and Eve from eating the fruit? We know that when the God made Adam and Eve ,He gave them free will, God always tells us what is Good and what is Evil. But He never Forces us, As He has given us free will. He will not control us.
- As Adam and Eve sinned, you would have thought to yourself what is sin ? Sin is doing what you want when you know that's not what God wants.
- When we sin we always try to cover it but it isn't a solution. Solution only comes from the salvation of God.
- We should never doubt God words.
- As we would not like to fall under the temptation .What do we need to do? James 4:7 "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
