Cain and Abel
Adam lay with his wife Eve and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain(meaning "I have created").Later she gave birth to his brother Abel(it means breadth or temporary or meaningless).Abel was a shepherd while Cain was a farmer. At harvest time Cain brought the Lord God 'some' fruits of the soil as an gift offering. Whereas Abel brought fat portions from the 'firstborn' from his flock.
The Lord God accepted Abel's offering whereas He rejected Cain's offerings. This made Cain very angry. His face grew dark with fury. Then the Lord God asked him "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you will do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you ,but you must master it." Here we can see God is warning him, but still he didn't listened. And so Cain took his brother to the fields and killed him.
Then God asked Cain "Where is your brother?" He replied "How should I know? Am I his keeper"? Cain could have told the truth and could have accepted his mistake but he didn't apologize and repeated the same mistakes as his parents. So the Lord God cursed him that he was banished from that ground and that ground will no longer yield the crops for him. He would be considered a fugitive and a tramp upon the earth and will wander from place to place.
Application
- It was a time of the harvest when both brothers gave their sacrifice to God. It wasn't a sin sacrifice but it was a thanksgiving sacrifice.
- Abel brought fat portions from the 'firstborn' from his flock but Cain gave some fruits not first fruits.
-Abel gave first preference to God whereas Cain gave first preference to himself.
-This is an unchanging principle, that the first fruit always belong to God and It also applies today.
- Some of you may ask why should I give my first fruit to God ? Because God gives us the ability and strength to do work and He also provides us everything we need.
- There are two unchanging principle
1) first fruit belongs to God.
2) Our praises belongs to God.
