Authors of Bible
Old Testament
As we know historically it is been held that Moses was the author of the first five books of Old Testament which are known as Pentateuch('five volume book' compiled of Genesis, Exodus , Leviticus , Numbers , Deuteronomy). The Jewish traditions suggest that the author of the book Joshua is been written by Joshua himself except for the final section of the book which is about his funeral which is credited to have been written by Eleazar (son of Aaron).
According to tradition Samuel wrote the book of Judges but the authorship is uncertain. It may be possible that Samuel assembled some of the accounts from the period of Judges and that such prophets as Nathan and Gad had a hand in shaping the material. The author of Ruth is unknown but the Jewish traditions points out Samuel but it is unlikely because of mention of David ( Ruth 4:17-22).Furthermore the style of Hebrew used in Ruth suggests that it was written during period of the monarchy. The author of the first and second Samuel cannot be known with certainty since the book doesn't give the indication of the identity. Some have suggested that Zabud(son of Nathan) have written it.There is little conclusive evidence to who would have written first and second kings it but Jewish traditions suggest that it had been written by Jeremiah.
According to Jewish traditions Ezra wrote Chronicles ,Ezra and Nehemiah but this cannot be established with certainty.A growing consensus dates chronicles in the latter half of fifth century B.C, thus possibly within Ezra's lifetime. The author of the book of Esther is unknown but it is clear that the author was a Jew.Although the book of Job consists of the words of Job and his counsellors,Job himself was not the author. We may be sure that the author was an Israelite. This unknown author probably had access to oral and/or written tradition sources which, under divine inspiration,he composed the book that we have now.
The book of Psalms is not written by a single author but is been written by many different authors. Majority of Psalms is been written by David. The Psalms written by David are 3-9 , 11-41 , 51-65 , 68-70 , 86 , 101 ,103 , 108-110 , 122 , 124 , 131 , 133 and 138-145. Aspah has written Psalms 50,73-83.The sons of Korah have written 42,44-49,84-85,87-88. Solomon is said to have written 72,127 and Moses has written 10. Ethan the Ezrahite has written Pslam no 89 and Heman has written Psalm no 88, but there are still many Psalms whose authors are anonymous those Psalms are called orphan Psalms.
The book of Proverbs begins with a title ascribing the proverbs of Solomon, it is clear that he is not the only author of the book.Proverbs 22:17 refers to the"sayings of the wise".The presence of an introduction in 22:17-21 indicates that these sections stem from a circle of wise men,not from Solomon himself.Proverbs 30 is attributed to Agur son of Jakeh and 31:1-9 to king Lemuel. There is no time period or writers name mentioned in the book of Ecclesiastes, but several passages strongly suggest that king Solomon is the author(1:1,12,16;2:2-9;7:26-29;12:9).His unique style of Hebrew and his attitude towards rulers may point to another person and a later period.Verse 1 of Songs of Songs appears to ascribe the authorship to Solomon. He is been referred in the book several times(1;1-5;3:7,9,11;8:11-12) and several verses in the book speaks of a king(1:4-12;7:5), but we cannot say certainly whether he was the author or not.
There is only one name that has been attached to the book of Isaiah which is Isaiah, but many scholars challenge the claim that Isaiah wrote the entire book that bears his name. The book of Jeremiah by Jewish traditions is said to have been written by Jeremiah. We cannot be certain who wrote Lamentations but by Jewish traditions say that it is been written by Jeremiah. Also there is similarity in vocabulary and style between the Jeremiah and Lamentations. The book of Ezekiel is said to have been written by Ezekiel himself. The Author of the book Daniel is said to have been Daniel as the book mentions Daniel as its author several times.
As the writer of Hosea, Hosea son of Beeri prophesied at the middle of eight century B.C. The Author of the Joel which is Joel cannot be identified with the 12 other figures of old testament which have the same name. The mention of this prophet cannot be seen outside the books of Joel and Acts(2:16).Amos the Author of the book of Amos was the from Tekoa which is a small town about 6 miles south of Bethlehem and 11 miles of Jerusalem. The book of Jonah does not identify the author, but by Jewish it is been ascribed that it is been written by Jonah himself.Little is been known about Micah the author of Micah. What we can learn about him is from book itself and Jeremiah 26:18.Micah is from town of Moresheth(1:1),probably from Moresheth Gath(1:14) in southern Judah. There is nothing been known about Nahum the author of Nahum except hiss hometown Elkosh, and its general location is even uncertain. Also little is been known about Habakkuk who is the author of Habakkuk except that he was a contemporary of Jeremiah.Zephaniah the author of Zephaniah was a person with a considerable social standing in Judah and was probably related to royal line.Haggai the author of Haggai was a prophet who, along with Zechariah encouraged the returned exiles to rebuild the temple.Zechariah the author of Zechariah prophetic ministry took place in the postexilic period, the time of the Jewish restoration from Babylonian captivity. The name Malachi means "my messenger".Since the term occurs in(3:1),and since both prophets are called the messenger of lord(2:7;Haggai 1:13),some have thought Malachi to be only title that tradition given to author.
New testament
Matthew the author of Matthew was one of the 12 apostles. His name means "gift of the Lord",was a tax collector who left his work to follow Jesus. Although there is no direct internal evidence of authorship, it was the unanimous testimony of the early church that the Gospel of Mark was written by John Mark. The important evidence comes from from Papias(A.D 140),who quotes an even earlier saying that Mark was a close associate of Peter, from whom he received the tradition of things said and done by the Lord. The name of the author in the Gospel of Luke does not appear in the book, but much evidence points to Luke. This Gospel is the companion volume to the book of Acts, and the structure of these two books indicates that both were written by the same person .The Author of the Gospel of John is John himself and he was one of the 12 apostles.John was a fisherman who left his work to follow Jesus. As mentioned above the the author of the book of Acts does not name himself, but evidence points out Luke.
Now there consists series of letters from Romans to Philemon which are all been written by Paul. From Romans to 2 Thessalonians the letters are written to the church's of that particular places.Where 1 Timothy,2 Timothy and Titus are known pastoral letters because they give instructions to Timothy and Titus concerning the pastoral care of churches. The author of Hebrew does not identify himself, but since the reformation it has been widely recognised that Paul could not have been the author because to Paul's usual practice the author does not identifies himself in the letter. The earliest suggestion is said to have been Barnabas. The other leading candidate in forvthe authorship is said to have been Apollos, who was first suggested by Martin Luther and who is been favoured by many scholars. The seven letters following Hebrew - James 1,2 Peter, 1,2,3 John and Jude- are often been designated as The General Letters. The author of James is James himself and he was probably the brother of Jesus.1,2 Peter is been written by Peter on of 12 apostles
The 1,2,3 john Is written by John one of 12 apostles and Jude is been written by Jude. The last book in the Bible Revelation is written by apostles John on of 12 apostles.
